Value Of Old Engineering Manuals?

Thu Sep 25, 2008 11:59 pm

My family has a copy of a BOAC Technical Division manual for a Rolls Royce Merlin aero engine. I'm not sure of the mark or mod, as I don't have the book in hand, but I do recall it specifies that it is for the transport version of the Merlin.

Another post regarding a manual for a Vickers Viscount piqued my curiousity: Are these manuals worth anything on the collectors market?

Obviously it would depend on age, condition and rarity, but I imagine items like these might fetch a fair amount from the right people.

I'd take it a step further and save a search for the relevant keywords. That way, eBay will email you when a similar item is listed.

Also, be sure to search for "completed items". That way, you might be able to see what they've sold for in the past.

Personally, I recommend offering it up as an "Identify This" prize!  bigthumbsup

The value of such things ranges from using them as door-stops to many hundreds of dollars depending on what someone wishes to pay to obtain one. Obviously the rare aircraft command the highest prices.
I've been offered a lot of money for some of my collection. The manuals commanding the biggest bucks are usually the cockpit ops manuals.
I've had a few copied so I could "share" the love without parting with my prized "originals".

I saw that VV thread, and it is interesting to observe that no one responded.
I have some VV manuals as well.
