CDG - IAH Route Over Atlantic

Sat Oct 18, 2008 10:21 pm

I recently flew CO flight #11 from CDG to IAH. I was surprised when we flew directly over the Atlantic from CDG to Florida and then parallel to the Gulf Coast into IAH. On previous flights, the general route appeared to be due west from CDG over the Atlantic, to Nova Scotia and then down the east coast and over to IAH.

As usual, the service on CO was excellent and the flight was enjoyable.

Yes, that was the flight as shown on Flightaware. We were running about 90 minutes behind schedule - would the change in route have been made to make up time?

Not distance wise. The straight line is over North American land until Newfoundland, and makes landfall at the southern tip of Ireland. Going "straight over" the Atlantic is only "straight over" in certain map projections, not reality. Check out the Great Circle Mapper route

Sorry to be off topic, but were you in BizFirst or Y class?

I'm not a pilot, I'm a mechanic, so I don't really know much about Transatlantic routings.
