Towing Aircraft To Stands At ATL

Thu Oct 30, 2008 2:23 am

Last night a friend emailed me a question. He recently flew through ATL, and noticed *some* (not all) arriving aircraft were met "at the end of the runway" and towed into their bays. He didn't notice which bays in particular -- but he did mention that it was different airlines and different plane types.

He was wondering why this would be the case. My guesses were (unlikely) fuel-saving measures or (more likely) jetwash restrictions (I remember we had to be towed into one of the gates at LGA for this reason).

Why would aircraft be towed to bays from the runway/taxiway at ATL?

Not the case.

Those aircraft are being towed to and from the ramp across the field.

Interesting, my friend specifically said that the aircraft were towed to stands after landing. I asked him if they were being towed from another part of the airport and he said no.

Working for an airline that has a base there, I can assure you that isn't the case. Might look like that becuase they're crossing downfield or taking the Victor loop around the end of the runway.

i was at ATL on october 28th and saw a lot of this as well, mostly DL 767s being towed (i don't know where) but a couple were towed to the gate underneath the crown room i was in, thought it was a little strange.

They are getting towed from remote parking spots at either the TOC or the North pad to a gate for a outbound flight. This happens at a lot of airports. There just isn't enough gate space for airplanes to sit for long layovers.
