Medical Checks - Maintenance

Sat Nov 22, 2008 6:19 am

How is the requirement covering Medical checks for Maintenance personnell at your region.
Out here an Annual mandatory medical check is required to be carried out every before every 12 months to continue working the field.

Also random checks with alcosensor or a blood/urine sample can be required in case of any doubt as to the individual not being in a sober state on official work.

I think the blood/urine collection is pretty universal. We have a guy who shows up at my work about once every few weeks and hauls somebody away to go pee in a cup. It's quite comical because he'll walk around the terminal with the cup in hand and it's in plain view of our PAX.

Besides the FAA mandated random drug/booze testing we also have yearly physicals for taxi quailfied mechanics. All non taxi qualed have no company mandated checks. We are covered through our medical insurance for a yearly exam. Not everyone does it though.

Presuming the cup is empty then  Smile

Why is it not mandatory for all Mx staff but for Taxi qualified.since all are working on a system.

I think businesses in the USA tend to avoid selecting "suspects" for drug urine tests....too many PC hurdles...instead, they draw the lucky winner's name out of a hat and call it random selection...of course, it's very possible that they purposefully only put one guy's name into the hat  ziplip . This is especially important at US Airways, because they absolutely cannot risk DUI Doug having to prove sobriety  duck !

Considering the job one works with...This is a welcome sign, unless its too frequent on the same person  Smile

I don't think that is the case when it comes to our craft. We all get the random testing. It usually happens as soon as the midnight shift arrives. I have seen subjective testing used. It is company policy to get tested anytime there is aircraft damage, like a towing incident or when there is a personal injury. I've also seen it when there has been suspicion of being impaired. One guy at our station did get fired last year for this, we think.

Now back to Mel's original question, which wasn't about pee tests, but yearly medical tests. Why is it that only taxi qualed mechanics get physicals at my airline? My guess is they want to make sure those guys can see and hopefully not have a heartattack while driving a plane around. They can do a bunch of damage while at the controls. Meanwhile if I croak while I'm standing on a ladder or changing an oil filter, well it sucks for me. It most likely doesn't endanger anyone else. I should have been using my companies health plan and gotten looked at (I do personally). That falls under the you are all big boys and can mind your own health. Now we do get yearly audio testing and some shops like cadnium plate get tested for chemical exposure.

why not covering the other shifts....There could be violation there too?

Out here its part of the Physicals inclusing the Reflex response test.

That is when the call for random testing comes for our shift. They do it then mostly because the test giver isn't there all night. I don't know when they do it for the other shifts. If they have to due a test for causeon midnights you either wait until the test guy gets there in the morning or it can be done at a local hosipital I think.

I would imagine it would be done as soon as -- thus at the local hospital. I know that for legal reasons, if the police don't do a test within a defined time of stopping someone for suspected DUI, it's inadmissable. This is due to the fact that everybody metabolises substances at different rates, so you can't "backwards calculate" how impaired the driver was at the time he was stopped.

Thats true.
In case of doubt...the tests need to be conducted as soon as possible for accurate results.
