Might be they're sending the napkins via carrier pigeons!!!  Big grin

Kidding of course, but WN is rapidly gaining on the technology front and well beyond other airlines.

All of our ACARS data runs via VHF-3 and then through a CRM-114 discriminator...  Wink

As it is with most airlines.

Really, though, the OP should check out how many AS sends. Heck, they regularly send 1600+ ACARS messages a month just that are just PIREPS.

I wish I had been the guy to invent ACARS. What a great idea and what considering the volume of ACARS messages from carriers all over the world they must be making a fortune. It is an expanding technology as well, before we know it pretty much everything will be done via ACARS.

And even then, if you decoded them, they would all say Wing Attack Plan - R, with the P-O-E authenticator  Smile

On a more serious note, WN may be paying a "per msg" or "per character" fee. AA used to do that, but recently (within the last few years) negotiated a "flat rate" billing structure for ACARS msgs [as well as SABRE, which ACARS msgs require use of]. I no longer make an effort to "piggyback" routine ACARS msgs and am willing to send more "marginal" info msgs than previously and dispatchers are sending more "routine" enroute/terminal weather updates. OPNLguy might know for sure --or be able to get that type of info.  Wink

I'm sure that the author of this 2006 article had to answer to the Coca-Cola Company. Ditto for Google for making it publicly available via a search...

Back in the early 70's I worked for a computer science research organization that was mostly funded by DARPA (called ARPA then.)

One of our assignments was to find ways to apply advanced computer techniques to air operations for the military. We proposed a lot of ideas like glass cockpits, ACARS, EFBs and many others (of course the names were different). I was looking forward to a series of jumpseat flights to observe how pilots used or needed information. Unfortunately the government decided that private companies would do all this anyway so our project ended.

We were also asked to see how our network (ARPANET) could be applied to the military. During that project we found out that the US Pacific fleet was still using the same comm systems that were used in WWII!. The Japanese missed the communications center at Pearl Harbor.

The ARPANET stuff worked out better. Good thing. The Pentagon, then in the middle of a war, didn't want to fund the network without some military payback. Little did we know it would lead to a revolution in pornography.

I guess I'll be the first the ask - how do you know? How are you receiving these messages?

Your answer to that question will provide the answer to your question ... especially if it's frequency related!

So, is WN still sending very few, 3 and a half years later? lol. Way to dig up an old thread.
The above post is my opinion. Don't like it? Don't read it.

Interesting, I think we use an Illudium Q-38 Space Modulator instead.

I hear you can enhance the RF gain by using a Cathermin tube with inindium complex of +4 from an Interocitor (but it has to have a bead condenser model #: AB-619).

They use the Bell & Howell COM Products 6700 series Recorder with the parallel-processed Retro Encabulator.

Then we should hardly be surprized at their lack of ACARS messages!
