Adapting To Flying With Left Hand On An Airbus

Hi was wondering if pilots find it difficult to adapt to flying with their left hands after being promoted to captains on Airbus aircraft.
I would assume that after years of using the right hand to fly pilots would take time to adapt, but then again i have no flying experience so wouldn't really know.

I don't really think there would be much of a difference between Airbus and Boeing (Sidestick vs. yoke) other than the fact that it is a side stick.

Even with your traditional yoke found on most aircraft, if you're in the right seat you generally fly with your right hand on the control column and the left is used for the power controls. This of course changes once you move over to the left seat though.

The only thing I would think would really take some adjustment is for those of us who tend you use both hands on the control column at times.

I must admit that I overlooked the fact that pilots on Boeings would also have to adjust...but on either type would the shift from right to left be difficult.

I would think that it really just depends on the individual person. Although I've only flown small aircraft, I've flown from both seats and haven't had any problems adapting to either hand. But, being right handed, I do prefer flying with my right hand which is odd because I drive my car mostly with my left  Smile

It takes all of about 30 seconds on either the Airbus or Boeing.

It's completely a non-issue. Even from the beginning of training in light piston singles, one will find themselves flying with their left hand and operating the power and other controls with their right. If you become an instructor or safety pilot, you spend more time in the right seat and fly with your right hand.

The hand being used is totally irrelevant. Proper aviating, an effective instrument scan and remembering to look around at regular intervals are the only things that matter at the basic level.
If you need someone to blame / throw a rock in the air / you'll hit someone guilty

I'm right handed but I use my left hand with to fly. Its weird...

It's surprisingly not that difficult, atleast in my experience, years ago I got the chance to fly a NW sim when my dad was in training and I sat in the captains seat and flew, I am right handed and didn't have a problem with it.

I would have to say that switching seats isn't difficult as far as the yoke is concerned. However, using the wrong had to control knobs and switches, etc completely threw me off. After years of performing flows from the right seat, when I moved over I found myself wanting to reach with my left hand to manipulate the panel and overhead instead of the right. Took a little while to retrain the muscle memory.

Same for me. That's what CFI training does though. Small details that might be easy to overlook are probably the largest issue. ie. lining up the rivets on the cowling when aligning for landing or parking.

Try driving with your left hand or your right hand on the steering wheel. No problems right?

The thing to remember is that flying is not micro-surgery when it comes to hand movements. Precision is required, but not at a millimetric level. Either hand is more than precise enough for the job.

Are you referring to the Yoke or sidestick.

I fly with my left hand in the left seat of an A-320, MD-80, B-767, or L-1011. In the left seat that's the hand that isn't tied up with thrust levers, etc. This is a total non-issue.
