Question About Gate Rental Fees

Thu Feb 12, 2009 2:35 pm

I know the costs may vary widely, but how do I get a reasonable approximation at what an average airline pays in Gate Rental Fees at a reasonably large airport?

Is there a way to find out what American or United pay per gate in ORD, a primary hub for both of them? Or what Delta pays in ORD which is not a hub at all for Delta? Where is this information to be found?

How are gate fees assessed? Are they year long contracts? Sometimes a single gate appears to be shared among multiple airlines, how is that resolved?

Anyone with intimate knowledge of how gate rental fees are determined and assessed and is willing to give a brief description would be greatly appreicated.

Back in 2003 I heard on a guided tour through the airport FRA something about 6 k€ / hour for a widebody at the gate and 500 € / hour for parking at the end of the airport.

The average gate rental in 2007 was $1,161,251.85 per gate - thats according to the FAA's CATS system. For comparison, ATL cost $235,615.34 per gate.

I believe the numbers that MOBflyer is pulling this information from includes other rents besides the "gate area" if I'm not mistaken. Am I right?...wrong?...

However, I suppose it is good enough for a "rough estimate" though.

Its aeronautical passenger terminal rent. It includes Customs charges (by the airport - not the feds) and gate rental. I do thinl there's something up with those costs though. ORDs seem way out of line.

...It sure would be great if there were actual published definitions to go along with FAA/DOT/GOV lists.
