757 Door Arrangement

Thu Feb 26, 2009 5:39 pm

A relative of mine recently flew on two 757 flights. He said that the L2 door was only used in one of the four instances. I know that using that door eases the pre-departure service in first class, but if space is not an issue why would an airline not use the L2 door?
Why do Aerospace Engineering students have to turn things in on time?

At the station I'm at my little AAirline boards 757's with the L2 door, but at other stations they board via the L1 door. Some of the stations do not have telescoping jetbridges so they can not adjust the length of the bridge for the L2 door. Also boarding via the L2 door makes it harder for the lav truck to back in and service the Mid Lavs. Some stations the length of the ext. power cord makes it impossible to board via L2 and have the airplane on ground power to save fuel and not run the APU.

Delta also uses L2 door for boarding at most stations. Except with the 757's that we recieved from that little AAirline. because of the previous mentioned lav servicing issue. We resolved the issue by using the L1 for deplaning and to allow lav service to be completed. Then moving the bridge to the L2 door for boarding.

that little TWAAirline, perhaps?  Wink

BA used to board its domestic 757s from L1 mainly - I believe this was because the T1 gates at LHR that served the SuperShuttle routes were equipped with fixed airbridges which didn't telescope as mentioned above.

IIRC - the L1 door has slightly smaller dimensions than the L2 door ?

btw I much prefer the 8-door arrangement over the 6-door, 4-overwing exit arrangement...

If the airbridge just goes in and out, and is not on wheels, then you cannot taxy a B757 into position to use the L2 door. The engine ends up about a foot from the jetway. But you can shut down and tow it in. We have fixed jetways here, and use L1 door. At airports with jetways on wheels, we use L2 door.
We also use L1 only for a B767, but use L2 on B744 and B777. But you have got to trust the safepark system as the B777 engine ends up about 3 feet away from the jetty.

Even if you have a single class cabin L2 door is used if possible to ease congestion in the cabin. Some passengers will go forwards to find their seat and some will go aft. Using the L1 door everyone has to go aft regardless.

I flew CVG-JFK on ship 6810 the other day and we did the exact opposite... boarding in CVG was through door L1 and deplaning in JFK was through door L2.

This week I flew on a DL 757 from LAS to JFK, boarded thru L2 in LAS and deplaned via L1 in JFK, so it just depends on the gate arrangement.

We were supposed to have received a low profile lavatory truck to solve that problem but it works intermittently and not everybody follows the rules anyway.

Surprising.Isn't there an Internal Audit to enforce the same at the airline.
Its mandatory to follow rules enforced by the regulatory authority of the state.

I flew many times on TWA’s 757’s and boarded and deplaned thru L2 quite often, I wonder how TWA handled the lav servicing issue when using L2.

We use the B752SF & B752PCF.....The former only has L1 & R1 door functioning, the rest are deactivated. On the latter there is only one small inward opening door on the Left side.

They do have audits a couple times a year and they are announced. So there are a couple times of year when all or most rules are being followed correctly.

Sad,if the management does not strictly adhere to the rules & only plays along for the audit.
An Audit is a means of correcting the deficiencies in the airline.
Have you tried getting people to enforce rules out there?

Don't know about the a/c flying the domestic routes, but if memory serves well, BA had a galley at door 2.

Mid lavs on a B757 are an option. We have 2 lavs at L1 and two at number 3 doors.

But I don't see the problem The B757 is so high off the ground the average lav truck would be able to back up under the fuselage.

Oh yes I had forgot all about them, I think they still have them in T2 at LHR.

Last crewed the B752 a few weeks back and boarded through L2 and on turn around we again used L2... On our return to LHR we had to bus it but we used L1, L2 & L4, time I come out of the FD from handing the pilots some paperwork all the pax had gone, it was amazing, three exits rock!

From what I have seen most of our (British Airways) A321's, B752's, B763's & B772's all use the L2 doors where air bridges / gates allow.

Kimberly.....I really can't keep up with which fleet you are on & indeed which aircraft you are trained on......744 & 757 now?

FYI On the A321 99% of the time it's 1L, the 757/767 generally 1L but on rare occasions 2L. I'm only trained on the 3 short haul types these days.....so can't answer for the 777& 744.

As for using 3 doors to disembark a 757 with steps/busses  Big grin at LHR it's just the one, 1Lor 2L, never 4L.  Smile
