Major Airports With Land And Water Runways

Mon Mar 23, 2009 8:14 pm

Got to thinking today, is HNL the only major airport with both traditional land runways and active water runways. Most airports are near the water but how many have runways for seaplanes (i.e., same tower controls both land and water runways)?

In the case of HNL, there is only one "airline" (with just one aircraft) using the water runway.

Juneau has one:

I'd have to imagine that several airports on the Alaskan coast (or on lakes) have water runways.

Can't think of any others offhand.

Apparently LGA has one too. C'mon somebody had to say it.

Wasn't that where PanAm's flying boats operated from? On a related note, SFO used to be the base for the Clippers and wasn't used much domestically until the Air Corps took over OAK.

YVR has a water runway in addition to the two main runways.

Yes, I think you are correct. What is now the south/freight/GA ramp was once the main terminal.

Also, don't forget ANC, which has a waterway as well...

Also, in Flight Sim 2004, it's no problem to land the Caravan on floats on the Columbia River and then taxi onto the threshhold of Runway 10L at PDX...  Wink Don't know if they'd let you do that in reality, the landing area would be in the surface area of the PDX Class C airspace.

You know, that was the first airport that I checked, but it didn't show one on Airnav:

Am I missing it? Or is Airnav missing it?

Try:

The LHD sea plane base is coincidental with the center of the PANC class C...  Wink

FAI (Fairbanks) also has a parallel water runway next to its paved runway.

ANC should qualify, although it seems to me the lake has it's own airspace, so maybe the main tower is not involved?
YTZ (Toronto Island / City Centre)
YYJ (Victoria / Patricia Bay - not the downtown float base)

CXH (Vancouver Harbour) is the reverse to the norm...a towered seaplane aerodrome (if you ignore the helicopters of course)

Not sure if the YZF tower handles the float base as well, as they are a few miles apart. Seems to me there is at least an advisory service provided though.
Tower, Affirmitive, gear is down and welded

Not sure, maybe one of our friends up in the great state of Alaska (who's been there, done that) can enlighten us  Smile Maybe they string out runway lights (and waterproof electrical wiring) on pool floaties  Wink

I always thought the Clippers used the current DL Shuttle location. I kind of guessed that from the name on the building, The Marine Air Terminal.
