How Many Airlines Still Do Own Catering?

Sun Apr 05, 2009 1:52 pm

Are there any airlines worldwide which still have their own in house catering or has it all gone to third parties now?

In this country, both JAL and ANA still do their own catering. ANA's catering services are award-winning several times over and they have some of the country's most accomplished culinary personalities on their consultation staff.

KLM catering, even has catering bases at outstations.

It is quite a big thing logistically, did you know for example that most catering goods for the return long haul flights to AMS are transported by sea, and not by air....

IIRC Chelsea Food Services is fully owned by CO and is their exclusive provider, at least in their hubs.

When you say "goods" you mean meals?

Thai does their own catering at BKK. I believe that they also do the catering for a few airlines as well.

Probably the goods needed to make the meals for the reurn flights to AMS, although I'm sure many locally sourced products are used for the ingredients, I guess goods also involves the plates, cutlery amongst others.

Am i along the right track here?

Singapore Airlines does their own. My wife just visited the SIA headquarters this week and saw where they make the meals.

For the most part Air North does their own as well out of their still fairly new kitchen at Whitehorse Airport.

I believe Qantas have catering kitchens based in Australia and I think Air New Zealand also have there own in Auckland NZ.

I presume many of the "major" airlines have their own catering (many of which have been named already), and outsource their catering to other companies at the less served destinations / hubs to avoid the logistical nightmare of getting "goods" there in the first place.

Yes good question. By goods i meant stuff like the beverages, trays, cutlery, cups etc.

I believe most meals (at least economy) are shipped frozen.

Cathay Pacific has a massive catering facility at HKG. Not sure who they use internationally, but at home they use their own catering.

I've never heard of an airline shipping frozen meals. Do you know which airlines do this?

Wouldn't this be a better thread for the Civil section. What does this have to do with the technical operation of airline aircraft? ? ?  Angry Catering? ?  banghead

IMO, it has something to do with the operational aspect of running an airline. Hence 'Tech/Ops'.
