"Pacific Configuration"?

I was reading about AirMike here, and it states that

What is "Pacific Configuration"? Is that something special for the environment or just seats moved around?

The "Pacific Configured" birds have smaller First Class (738) and BusinessFirst (764ER) cabins.

NW had "Beach Market" set up on their 741's right up until the end. They flew between Hawaii and Japan and had 450+ seats if I remember correctly. The thought was that Japanese are typically smaller and didn't need the same amount of space as US passengers.

The "Beach Market" planes were 747-200's. The 747-100's stopped flying to Asia long before their retirement from NW as a whole.

450 seats on the 741's, 430 on the 742's.

That was not the reason, as they still had 31in pitch in coach.

It's simply because HNL, GUM, and SPN are mostly leisure destinations with light demand for the premium cabins, so NW ran high-density / coach-heavy 747's on the routes.
