OCD In A/c Maintenance

Fri Jul 17, 2009 1:58 am

This is directed to my fellow techs out there, Do any of you get a little obsessive compulsive when it comes to certain things work related? For me it's engine oil caps. It's not uncommon for me to check the oil caps a couple times in a night to make sure they are on. In my "normal" day to day life I'm not this way at all.

Guess it comes from seeing guys get burned on things like that. In aircraft maintenance it seems to be the simple stuff that gets you into trouble.

P.S. Do any of you pilots out there get a bit OCD about certain things?

Safety nets in Aviation are excellent in preventing errors.
I use the policies in daily life too.

Its important to check minimum but be confident of it.
Oil caps after checking, mentally tune yourself to place your hand on the closed cap.If you are distracted during that time,it serves as a physical confirmation along with visual one that the cap was closed.

Whenever I close latched panel/access door or anything held on by 1/4 turn fastener I hit the panel around the latches and fasteners to make sure they are secured. Known a couple guys get in trouble for access doors departing in flight.

It may sound silly, but I get a little OCD about safety wire. Not only that it's done properly, but I also make sure that it looks beautiful. It drives me crazy when guys leave something safetied, and it looks just terrible!
