Delta Hubs - A Question Regarding Kdtw

Mon Aug 24, 2009 1:26 pm

Since NWA merged with Delta is KDTW now considered a Delta hub - either in a schedule sense or in terms of crew assignments? Also, any other hubs that are now a part of Delta operations that weren't before the merger?

Yes, DTW will soon be a Delta hub. And so will MSP. DTW and MSP were Northwest two major hubs. The whole NW fleet and network is now completely integrated in DL. A Northwest aircraft although still painted in Northwest livery is technically a Delta aircraft. There are still a few aircraft painted in Northwest livery but you won't see those long, end of 2010 at the latest the red tails will be history.
To answer your question, DTW and MSP are two hubs that weren't part of Delta operations before the merger.

At the moment the great majority of flights out of DTW are still NW flights. The completion of the merger and move to operate on a single certificate will not happen until last I heard February 2010. I suppose if you wanted to split hairs you could say that yes all flights operated in NW colors are Delta flights, but that wouldn't be entirely true as NW and DL plan flights on two separate systems and use separate reservation systems as well. When the two carriers operate on the same certificate at that point will NW no longer exist. Until then DL is simply the parent company and NW is a wholly owned subsidiary on their own operating certificate. Don't forget MEM. They were the third NW hub and will be another DL hub once the merger is complete. NW aircraft in DL colors still use the NW callsign, they simply add "in delta colors" to the end. Hope this helps a little.

That's is really not accurate. Pilots cannot bid or fly aircraft from the other airline yet, Flight Attendants (and others) have not even voted on union representation yet, and the operations are not on the same certificate, nor will they be for a while. From a passenger's viewpoint, the transition is occurring more rapidly than the actual functional integration. Flights with dual codes (essentially all flights now) still carry different NW and DL flight numbers, and flight crews cannot interfly yet.

Still, it's happening faster than US Airways!
