Number Of Flight Crews Per Aircraft

Mon Nov 09, 2009 4:16 pm

I watched an aviation program recently where a pilot stated that one of the reasons LX retired the MD-11 was a high number of flight crews required per aircraft. He explained that each MD-11 required 10 Captains and 15 FOs. The mighty 11 was a two-man operation like the B767/777 and the A330/340, so how come there is a difference in the crew requirements? How many Captains/FOs are required per B777 ? I would imagine that the airline’s policy and the average length of flight would be of greater influence than the type of aircraft.

Thank you,

There are host of variables involved.

Everything from the airlines route network, frequency of flights, union agreements, time away from base, do crews operate augmented, etc..

I did some work for a carrier that could comfortably crew 6-crews per aircraft on average as lay-overs were minimal, CBA was quite flexible and crews could be kept productive.
