It appears that the planned diversion did not take place and the plane is almost all the way now to Memphis.

FedEx often routes planes so that they can stop in cities that might need extra lift. I suspect that this was one of those flights and that at first they thought they would need to stop, but did not end up needing the stop, so they ended up flying to MEM.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

Also note that flightware shows it to be a DC-10. It would be an MD-10 not DC-10.

I'm failing to see a diversion; the plane never landed.  confused

It flew around in a circle. It's a regularly scheduled flight. . .

hey Fxramper, yeah that's right but too I believe that the ATC system does not recognize an MD-10 so it defaults to DC-10. As you & I know there are no DC-10s flying for us. The last DC-10 flew in sept and the capt that flew that flight has finished 777 school.

On the same note, when working in ROW we were expecting a 747, no one asked which series, don't ask why, so I looked it up in Flight Aware. It said a -200, turns out that night we got a -400. We were a little surprised to say the least.

Back on topic, how often do the "extra lift flights" actually stop in these cities? I'm sure during this time (holidays) of year they become more frquent.

I really don't know since I haven't flown a sweep flight in years. You're correct that "peak" season will see many more add on and sweep diversions.

Am I reading you right that there are no DC-10s left in the FX fleet and that they've ALL been converted to the MD?

Yes you are reading me right. Not all DC-10s were converted though they just retired them. As I posted the last flight was back in sept and it was STL-MEM. They're gone. All DC-10 crews have moved to other jets.

MD-10s to both MEM and IND. A-300s and others are pretty rare.

I fueled them for 5 years and now I rely on you guys for a ride to work from time to time. The former FE chair makes for a neat perspective.

I can imagine. I absolutely adore the "mean/tough look" of the cockpit windows on the -10 and -11 (as well as the C-17) as viewed from outside thanks to the enormous side windows. The view from the FE chair must therefore be very cool.

You actually can't see out the side windows very well from the FE seat. The seat behind the captain is the best for that. When sitting you basically have an unobstructed view.

Doesn't really matter at night though  Smile

I've noticed this in some of the a.net photos taken from outside the port side of the a/c...very cool to see "two captains" looking ahead as the -10/11 takes off. Thanks for the bit about the FE seat.
