Why Not Use New Runway At ORD?

With the bad weather backing things up yesterday, why not use the new northern parallel since they can do simul approaches with 9R/27L? Isn't that what they built it for?

One concern at any airport, but especially ORD, is having enough equipment to keep multiple runways clear. I've been at ORD many times during heavy snow when there just isn't enough equipment to keep more than one runway each for departures and arrivals clear enough of snow to be usable. I have no idea if this is what you observed, but it's a possibility I suppose.

With the wind out of the east, we were down to two departure runways, 4L and 9R. We cannot land on 9L while departing on 4L in case of a go around...that would be ugly.
I will have a Manhattan.

Are the arrival runways 10 and 4R in this configuration, or does the converging thing not work?

On LiveATC I heard simul 10 and 4R arrivals all day long. To me it would make more sense to use 9L and 9R instead of 4L and 9R since they don't intersect... but they must have a reason for it. Snow removal perhaps, or maybe an additional tower/ground controller is needed.

We were IFR, so Plan X is not an option. We were forced to be on the "9"s" (Lndg 9R, 10/Dept 4L,9R).

In order to be on plan X, the wx must be VFR.

It's a much shorter taxi to 4R than to 9L. And since the intersection of the two runways is so close to both thresholds, staggering the departures should be fairly easy.

Which besides the issue of time, means that there are that many more taxiways to be kept clear.
Why do Aerospace Engineering students have to turn things in on time?

I don't see it on any of the configurations on the OIS site. I suspect that 9L doesn't get used all that much, while 27R gets used quite a lot, since it does allow triple approaches with 27L and 28.

I'd also suspect that once ORD gets more parallel runways, you'll start to see 9L get used more.
