Pics Of The Interior Of Fuel Tanks

Sat Jan 16, 2010 12:57 am

Does anyone here have any photos taken inside a large aircraft's fuel tanks?

Photo of the interior of the center section tank of a 747-100, used at the public hearing into the TWA 800 crash, believed to have been caused by exploding fuel vapors in the almost empty center section tank.

What are you looking for, specifically? I can narrow my search a lot if you've got a specific goal in mind.

This picture is of an L-1011 wing fuel tank. The wing was being dismantled for spare parts when the picture was taken. In the picture you are looking forward at the front spar. Portions of the rear spar and upper and lower skin have already been removed. Visible is a small section of the rear spar, the tank webs that prevent the fuel from sloshing about, some stringers and a wire bundle for the tank probes along with some tank plumbing.

Are you looking for photos of the outer wing tanks? Is this in regards to the 787 fuel contamination incident?

People talk about going inside the fuel tanks to do this-or-that task, so I began to wonder what it looked like in there. And I figured that if any group of people in the world could show me pictures, it was here.  Smile

And I was correct!

Indirectly, yes. More because it triggered a train of thought that ended at my question.

Thanks to all of you for your answers. In particular, 474218, thanks for that amazing shot and the detailed orientation you gave.

I think that cleaning fuel tanks was a career profiled on an episode of Dirty Jobs, but I am not sure. I'll have to look for that episode if it is on.

They had Mike crawling into the wing tanks of a KC-135 for some sealing and squeezing into the belly to change a fuel bladder.
What the...?
