747-400 Independent Gear Retract/extend

Wed Feb 03, 2010 10:55 pm

I have run into a video which shows the gear retracting separately from the other 3.

Why and how does this happen?

They have left the gear pins in to stop the left body gear and nose gear retracting, you can just barely see the left body gear door still opens and closes during the cycling of the gear lever.

The wing gear (sys #4) definitely wasn't pressurised however the pins would still have been in for safety sake as any residual pressure may have allowed the gear and doors to move, and seeing that the wing gear doors didn't open means there wasn't any pressure applied to them.

Retraction checks with Landing gear downlock pins will def cause a weakening of the pins over time.

Is there any life of these pins that they need to be replaced after fixed intervals or a check to confirm its material strength is satisfactory for the intended purpose.

I may not win often, but I damn well never lose!!! ;)
