X-Ray Of A Boeing 777

Thu Feb 04, 2010 11:44 pm

Hi All:

Came across this very interesting site where the guy actually took an x ray of 777, in parts of course, but its still interesting.

Following is the link to the site with video

Isn't that image (or one very similar?) on the wall of one of the hangars visible from the road at BOS?

Looks fake to me.

The aircraft proportion is off. for example : the ratio between wing span and engine diameter is off. Real 777 15.3:1, while the picture is only 11:1

No one would allow him to take an xray image in a hangar, while people are still working on the plane.

and he doesn't even know the plane was a 777. he said it was 747. I would imagine even if you're blind about airplane, you would know that this is a 777 if you work on it for 3 months.
One day there will be 100% polymer plane

I have my doubts as well, and yes he did get 747/777 mixed up! But the video says he uses a skeleton ("Freda") or dead bodies when he wants those sort of images. He seems pretty cautious when it comes to radiation, as any radiographer would be.

He also says he got the aircraft in 'boxes'... whether or not that's true I don't know.

The rest of his stuff is pretty cool as well.

You have got to be kidding me, you don't believe someone actually had a X-Ray film 270 feet wide by 60 feet high?

Hmmm.

Where are the engine pylons, the fan frame, the gearboxes, the floor, the wing box.....

Nice piece of art though.

Yes it's fake.... I've seen real x-rays of aircraft and they look nothing like that. For one the entire aircraft would be a blur because of all the structure, wires, plumbing...etc.

Another vote for fake. The dimensions of the main landing gear are way off...

Edit: the "photoid" key does not work for me, anyone else having this problem?  Confused Anyway here's the photo I wanted to show for comparison:

He says "Boeing sent me a 747 in containers, and I sent them back an XRay... I kid you not." I'm calling bullshit on this one. I'm suuuuree Boeing sent him a 777 in boxes, makes perfect sense...

And he says that was "500 components". If I was working on a project of this scale, and if Boeing shipped me an airliner in boxes... I think I'd at least know WHAT airplane it was, which he clearly does not.

That was my vote as well. When I worked for Douglas I saw an MD-90 ge x-rayed. They ropped it off and no one was allowed near it. And the images looked nothing like the picture in the link. Nice image piece of art like jetlife2 said.

I'd wager that it is the same image. And it's way larger (on the hangar) than an actual plane.

I've driven by that hangar hundreds of times in my life

Former United hanger, it's Delta now. And since it is on a fabric hanger the paint cracked and flaked off so now the lower half of the Xray/CAD drawing is gone so the airplane has no gear.
