Airline Maintenance Outsourcing

Mon Mar 29, 2010 11:38 am

I would like some information regarding case specific insourcing and outsourcing of maintenance for a few world airlines. I am writing a paper on outsourcing MRO and would like a few examples.

For example:

American Airlines:

B777 fleet: In-sourced at Alliance
B737 fleet: In-sourced at .............

British Airways:
B747 fleet: in-sourced at Cardiff.... (???)

Any information provided is much appreciated. I would also be very happy for specifics on WHY insourcing or outsourcing is chosen for a given fleet type.

Thank You

First off, what type of maintenance are you looking for? There is A check (rarely outsoutced), C check (sometimes outsourced), D check (often outsourced), and special visits.

One common reason with new fleets is tooling and equipment. A new fleet requires a lot of investment. Engine overhauls cost even more. If there is a vendor already equipped with the equipment and experience, they can have a cost advantage, especially if they have a higher volume of aircraft.

Engines are going to power by the hour agreements at times, so that means that the manufacturer provides all maintenance.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

I think CO does theirs in-house at IAH and MCO, I believe. Can anyone confirm this?

Some of it gets done in house at IAH/HOU and MCO, but most of the heavy checks are still farmed out. I know there's a place out in HKG where we send our 757/767/777's for heavy checks, but I don't know the name of the place. Most of the in house stuff heavy checks are done on 37's and 57's. I know MCO also does a lot of Mod work. That's where basically all of the winglet installations were done and that's where the LiveTV work is being done, but that is being installed by LiveTV personnel though.

For DL:
777 and 737 all airframe work done inhouse in ATL. 777 Rolls engines are done by AA. 737 engines are inhouse.

767 PSV(c check) inhouse ATL. HMV Haco in HKG.

757 PSV inhouse ATL, Hmv ST San Antonio.

MD88 letter check inhouse ATL, HMV AeroMexico GDL.

I'm not real sure about the former NW fleet.

I know the A320/319 c check will be coming back inhouse this summer. ST Moblie was doing them.

I think the widebodies are all done in Singapore.

For mod work some is done inhouse in ATL some in MSP. Some projects have been done at ST SAN.

We also insource a bunch of component and engine work from other airlines. Small to medium sized airlines rarely have engine and component shops. They just don't have the volume of work. That is why we outsource the 777 Rolls engines.

You're talking about HAECO !
767/777 gets heavy checks in HAECO . line maintainance is in IAH and EWR.
737/757 mods are in MCO , new 777 seats are fitted in HAECO. 757 are in MCO.

BTW , CO has a very large maintainance base @ MCO , I think its even bigger than the ones at EWR

Yes thank you I couldn't remember the name  Yeah MCO is big there's almost 800 mechanics based down there right now, a lot of them are ex-EWR too. EWR does do some light mod work though, mostly in the PSV hangar. I know the current BF seats in the 777's (not the new ones coming out) were done here by us at EWR. On another note our engine overhauls are all sent back to GE in Ohio, except for the RB211's which get sent back to Rolls Royce if I remember right. I don't think we really do any component MX on anything outside of HOU and I think even that's less than what it was. I remember reading somewhere that we outsource somewhere between 60 and 70% of our MX. I know years ago there was something like 10,000 mechanics and today there's only about 3,500 left if you also count GSE and Facilities MX.

British Airways:

BAMC, British Airways Maintenance Cardiff is a wholly owned subsidiary of BA.
They perform all heavy checks on the BA B744, B777 and B767 fleets.

BAMG BA Maint Glasgow is also a wholly owned subsidisary.
They perform all heavy checks on the BA B734 and A320.

The B757 heavy checks are performed by BA at LHR.

Smaller checks above a Daily and below a C check are performed by BA at LHR and LGW.
All ramp work (incl Dailys) at LHR and LGW are performed by BA.
Down the line, it depends. BA run some stations themselves, and sub-contract others.

BA sold their engine shop many years ago to GE. It still performs a lot of the BA Engine overhauls, although RR does some work ans Iberia overhaul the RB211-535.
