SFO's Yosem Star

Mon Apr 19, 2010 6:24 pm

The other day, while sitting in the jumpseat, I noticed ZOA assigned the Yosem STAR to SFO instead of the usual Modesto STAR. How long has the Yosem STAR been in use? And what's the advantage to using it over the Modesto STAR? Thanks.

The last issuance of the YOSEM arrival (YOSEM1) was 09MAR2007. It is an ATC assigned arrival only.

UAR 09/005 SFO YOSEM ONE ARRIVAL...
YOSEM ONE ARRIVAL AVAILABLE VIA ATC ASSIGNMENT ONLY WEF 0609281300

Given that MOD3 is the primary arrival, and that YOSEM is ATC assigned only, it is only meant as an offload STAR.

I hadn't noticed that that STAR existed-- they must have given it to UA 907

Hey Timz, I just read your earlier post, and my guess is that the UA aircraft was on the Yosem STAR. In all my experiences on the jumpseat, I've only witnessed it once. However, the captain the other day mentioned that he had also recently been assigned the Yosem STAR for the first time. On that particular day, however, we flew the normal Modesto STAR. To SFO, the smaller aircraft generally precedes the smaller aircraft. Often times, NorCal will instruct a larger aircraft to "not pass that (smaller) aircraft." Generally, FMS-equipped aircraft will be cleared direct ARCHI (after CEDES) to intercept the FMS Bridge final approach course on the FMS Bridge Visual 28R.

Smaller precedes larger, you mean-- but you're referring to parallel approaches to runways 28, right? I was asking who would go first, assuming they had to be sequenced out at Coaldale.

I still wonder if Oakland Center has to get the okay from NorCal Approach before they hand them two side-by-side airliners like that. Or maybe even Salt Lake has to get permission?
