A330 With Carbon Fibre Skin?

Wed Apr 28, 2010 5:05 pm

There is a piece of news at flightglobal.com about a test that Airbus is going to do with a 14 Sq Mts of carbon fiber on an A343 (MSN001). After reading the news I wonder is there was any possibility that the A330 family could get the Carbon Fiber fuselage, shaving few tons of weight and making it able to compete head to head with the 787. I do not know how big the investment could be, or if this can or can’t be done, however sounds nice if Airbus switch the skin of this formidable aircraft to CFPR and keep her in production for many more years..

Once again I do not know if this can be done, but based in this piece of news is possible.

Here is the link.

Quoting Carls (Thread starter):
shaving few tons of weight

If that would be possible it would be great news for the A330.
But as the article doesn't mention this, I don't believe shaving weight is the main objective of this test.

Of course is not the objective.
My question is, If this can be done on the A330? I know they are testing the CF piece in the A340, but I just wonder what could happens if the A330 can be switched to CFPR fuselage instead of Aluminum.

I can't see that this could be done at any reasonable cost and if it were done, you wouldn't end up with much in common with the current A330.

They'd have to add a grounding system to the airplane, which is not light in itself and will negate a lot of the weight savings. I believe several systems would need to be redesigned with additional lightning protection.

Airbus chose not to purse a CFRP fuselage with the original A350 design, so that guarantees we won't see it on the A330 or A340.
