Most Popular Engines

Sat May 15, 2010 10:46 pm

I've been wondering, what engines are offered and which are the most popular choices by the airlines? Planes that I'm curious about:

Airbus:

A318, 319, 320, 321
A332, 333
A343

Boeing:

744 (I know this isn't produced anymore, but what were the most common?)
767-200/200ER/300ER
777-200ER

Any comments would be helpful!

Quoting will777 (Thread starter):

Airbus:
A318, 319, 320, 321
A332, 333
A343

The A318 comes with CFM56 or PW6000. The rest of the family (A319/320/321) comes with CFM56 or IAE V2500.

A330 (-200 and -300) comes with GE CF6, PW4000, or RR Trent 700.

A343 comes with CFM56 only.

For way more detail than you probably want, check out the TCDS for each aircraft.

Unfortunately, I don't have the data to assess popularity on the Airbus models.

777-200ER

744 came with GE CF6, PW4000, or RR RB211. The PW engine was the most popular.

767-200 comes with PW JT9D, PW4000, or GE CF6 (most popular). 767-200ER comes with PW4000 or GE CF6 (most popular). 767-300ER comes with PW4000, GE CF6 (most popular), or RR RB211.

777-200ER comes with PW4090, RR Trent 800 (most popular), or GE90.

Thanks! This is exactly what I wanted! Does anyone have information about the most popular on Airbus models?

RR Trent 700 is the most popular, PW4000 is least.

I thought the CF6-80 was the most popular?

I pulled the data off the Boeing Orders & Deliveries page...note that it was only for the 747-400, not the -400F, -400ER, or -400ERF. If you roll them all together, the GE may well be on top.

I see. The reason why I said that is because I know of 3 carriers that ordered 744 with PW engines, thats CA, UA and KE. From my experience, SQ, CX and QF operate(d) both GE and RR 744's while BR, NH, JL, CI, LH run theirs with GE's. I know the Oasis 744s were PW but I don't know who originally ordered them. As for freighters, CV operates both GE and RR while PO has only GE. The only freighters I know personally that have PW are CA's. I didn't know PW sold a lot of engines for the 744. Thanks for the info Tom.

If you run the report from Boeing, the order count (747-400 only) comes out as:
GE - 160
PW - 176
RR - 106

The PW customers were: Air China, Air India, China Airlines, El Al, Korean, Malaysia, Mandarin, Northwest, Singapore, and United.

I found what your talking about at Boeing. I never realized that SQ and CI had ordered PW for the 744s. I noticed also that for the 744f/744erf that SQ and CX ordered PW for their aircraft, however, in my time at ORD having worked both SQ and CX freighters, they either have RR or GE, but Boeing has that nowhere in their. Also, I can't believe I forgot about NW and LY in my last post.....

Neither SQ or CX operate GE-powered 744s. SQ (incoluding SIAC) are all Pratt and CX has a mixed RR and PW fleet (the PW a/c are ex-SQ).
