ATC Hiring Question...

Does anyone know by chance if the FAA will be doing anymore General Public Hiring this year?
Also, do all AT-CTI schools require a 2 or 4 year degree with that program or can you still complete the program without the degree. The reason being my age would put me at that limit if I had to go for a 4 year, I would just be cutting it close with a 2 year.... Thanks guys!

Depends on the school... my old school just required a 2 year accredited degree + 3 additional classes (Weather, ATC1 & ATC2), pass a school created exam, prior to receiving the school's blessing for taking the AT-SAT...

That's College of Aeronautics @ LGA.

They do have an online division; figure $17k a year...

Question I have is why would anyone want to become a controller...do they want to be miserable?

Easy, wise-guy!! Because it´s in the Top Five best Jobs in the world?. Actually it only seconds to flying the Space Shuttle, but they aren´t hiring at the moment.

It pays very well as well- better than most airline Pilots earn anyhow...

No, the question is- why doesn´t everyone want to become a controller?

I know many controllers... they are miserable, have social, psychological and abuse issues...sure a few are happy and able to seperate themselves from the job. But many are far off their rockers...

It is not likely that the FAA will have anymore general hiring. They still have yet to get to the applicants from LAST July's general hiring. It is not expected that they will get to it until next fiscal year!

Your best bet if you want to be a controller is CTI right now.

Please, you don´t honestly mean this for real? I suspect you have your ATC knowledge from watching "Pushing Tin"?

I know several controllers as well, probably 200, and yes, a lot are off their rocker, many have a Porsche, an AMG SL, or an Audi RS6 and have Egos as tall as the Empire State.
But all Love their job, including myself who has been doing it for 25 years now. Where else can a young beginner earn 100K$ + with 25 yrs of age? and have fun doing so? OK you must be able to juggle 45 aircraft into FRA an hour.
But believe me- it´s great!!

I for my part like earning a ton of money, having to work only on 185 days this year.
I can´t believe not more people apply to work with us?

I know quite a handful, and have heard the stories from coworkers across the country...

Egos are definately up there thats for sure, along with hand holding, whining along with an entire list of qualities my 4 year old niece shares...

Alot of our old guys are great, they have the personality to do this job, but I can't say the same about alot of the new hires coming up from the academy. It's honestly a shame, that the agency isn't flushing them out down in OKC like they use to....


And Alittle background knowledge for you; in the very early days of electronic communication within the primative aviation field; in the military...there was no career field for a "controller", the controller positions were filled by individuals who could not pass tech school, but had experience using the radio...

I've been a controller in the FAA for almost 3 years now and frankly, there is nothing else I'd rather be doing. It's a great job, challenging yes, but I love it.

I have a friend who just got a job offer...so yes I do believe the FAA is still hiring this fiscal year. As for the CTI program, I know that there are 2 year programs to get the degree. Additionally the FAA is hiring people with zero experience off the streets. There are a couple street hires at my facility that arrived recently.

Please... Try this situation for you...

JFK @ late evening push... CAT II/III weather...RVR below 1000; delayed aircraft getting off the runway..causes the monitor to shutdown the localizer. Tower tries to reset the localizer remotely, but water in the ground causes the copper remote lines to short, air traffic can't confirm the status of the loc. You had several go around in the time it takes to reach the localizer site. You have the local ATCT, NY Tracon and various levels of management wanting constant updates to the situation and outtage..which is also now a COS issue (Only allowed a certain amount of outtages within a time period before your equipment gets downgraded; eg: from CAT-III to CAT-I). You finally reach the site after hauling ass; get to the equipment. You don't have enough time to get out to the field to verify the monitor reading with external test equipment because you need to return the site ASAP. The far field monitor looks happy, you do a few quick checks to test the integrity of the equipment. You certify & return to service. You watch; shitting bricks waiting for that first aircraft to touchdown...hoping you didn't screw up verifying or even foolishly leaving the localizer in quadrature...wind gusting; your standing along side the runway waiting to see that first aircraft land and get a PIREP....all you hear is reverse thrusters with a 744 turning off on a high speed taxiway...Walk back to you truck soaking wet and just collapse in the driver seat...

I'm 23...underpaid for what I do...I don't get the glory...most don't know myself and fellow techs exist. You maybe on the radio..but your transmissions don't get anywhere without our transmitters.

But I love my job, and wouldn't trade it for anything else...no two days of mine are ever the same and I'm not stuck in the fish bowl...

My knowledge on the air traffic side was questioned and more so; insulted comparing me to a pushing tin follower..

So I felt the response was very necessary...

just giving this site a side of aviation one hardly sees or even recognizes...
