How Long Is Your Flight?

Sun Jul 25, 2010 3:32 pm

How are flight times determined? I once flew a very fast aircraft across "the pond" and just before we left the aircraft, the captain announced our trip was 3h16m, one of the faster crossings. I was wondering if that was gate to gate, wheels up to touchdown, or some other method of measurement.

There is block time, from the time the plane leaves the "blocks" or the stand, at the departure airport, til it arrives on the stand at the arrival airport. Then there's trip time, the time the plane is actually flying. These two can vary quite a bit if you have excessive taxi times.

3:16 hours, that's faster then usual, my guess is the plane flew a little higher then usual as well?

If you were flying on anything other than the Concorde, I'm curious to know what type of aircraft you were on and what was the "city-pair" across the pond.

Isn't it obvious? Ancientpelican was clearly flying on an SR-71 from MEX-NRT across the Pacific; that's around 6000 nm, so about 3 hours at mach 3, no?

Can't have been an SR-71. It would have to slow for refueling. Probably an Aurora.

Humorous replies.

You mean 4 hours and 18 minutes with strong tail winds (of course). It was probably a "wheels up" time.

Done that in a BA 772 in March from EWR to LHR. Groundspeeds were inexcess of 800 MPH.

I wonder what the fastest JFK-LHR crossing other than Concorde was. Sometimes there are some crazy tailwinds.

I would have thought you'd need close to 900 MPH to get that crossing time.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, it was Concorde between JFK and LHR.

What was Concorde's endurance at typical cruise speeds?

that would be a SR-71, 1 hour 54 minuets 56.4 seconds- average speed 1,438.587 MPH.

that would have been including refueling.

I did JFK-LHR in 5 hours on a VS 744. Groundspeed hovered near 750-800MPH for the majority of the time. Had the same on an IAH-CDG flight which reduced the flight time by about 1.5 hours from block time.

But to answer your question, any flight time is an educated guesstimate based on many variables that has become more accurate with computer technology, however, I don't think you will ever be able to get an exact time, or at least one within 5 min 100 percent of the time (or even 10 percent of the time).

Actually when I flew LHR-IAH on CO the pilot said our flight time would be 9hrs and 2minutes and guess what, he was correct, it took exactly 9hrs 2minutes.

If you don't get into an ATC hold, the "arrive at time" function in many FMC's works quite well, and since it's constantly updating as the flight progresses it's quite possible to hit a flight time dead on the nose.

Problem with that is it went to FAB and not LHR, and i imagine it didn't go from JFK either.

Right, if it's constantly updated, that makes it much much more easy to determine.

I think what the OP is talking about is when the captain comes on and says "Our flight time today is 14hrs and 48 min" and it turns out that it's 15hrs 08min. The flight map constantly updates because if you watch it enough, the "Time to Destionation" time will roll back every once in a while (or roll forward depending on conditions).
