Blended Winglets On The A320

Thu Aug 05, 2010 12:29 am

Can you guys please tell me what happened with the Aviation Partners blended winglet design for the A320s? Did Airbus dropped off that program?

I believe that the latest news is that Airbus is developing what they call 'sharklets' on their own (to be manufactured by Korean Air Aerospace) which will appear in late 2012 on Air New Zealand's new A320's.

There was an article last year that mentioned a winglet retrofit mod in the works, but I don't know if that is still happening or not. [that article was here]

There was a set installed on a B6 A320 that did a bunch of testing in the military airspace off of SAN earlier this year, I believe they were Aviation Partners. It takes a while to go through all the results and fine tune the product though.

Yeah, IIRC API is the company that did it for B6. The rumors we're hearing hear in LGB is that JetBlue is really liking the results their seeing so far. With all the talk of a possible A320NG (re-engined, or re-design) I am not sure if it will actually go through though. A fellow CM did get some really nice shots of it while it was around the area here in SoCal and IMO is makes the plane look very very nice.

They actually approached B6 for the test aircraft as B6 had previously been involved with testing for Airbus in France a few years ago and nothing really came of it because the results were not wonderful and it would definitely not be available for retrofit. API wanted to make a better one that could go on new aircraft or through a retrofit and needed someone to test it. They looked AWESOME, and from what I have heard the results were a huge improvement over the previous test versions. But based on my knowledge API is having issues obtaining certain statistics from Airbus that are needed to fine-tune the product and progress towards a final design that can get slapped on.
