Follow Me Cars

Sun Aug 08, 2010 10:40 pm

I work out of JFK and I'm pretty sure we don't have them here. Come to think of it, the only video and pictures that I ever see of them is always in airports outside the US. We have to have them here in the states.

I guarantee you every major airport in the US has one or two follow me cars at the very least. Or at the very least, FOLLOW ME signs to be attached to suitable airport vehicles.

Considering some of the recordings of JFK ground, I have to imagine that they have them just in case.

At my former college haunt, our FBO used to send the FOLLOW ME car (an old 1950's army jeep with a plywood FOLLOW ME and yellow gumball light) out whenever a transient aircraft landed (and we tried to snag business from the other FBO on the field). Whether or not they followed us was entriely up to the flight crew...it was an uncontrolled field. We radioed ahead when it looked like a big plane (like King Air or jet) was going to follow us in, so the girl manning the counter could roll out the red carpet.

So you used to be involved in this shady business....mmmm

I won't go into details, but part of what I do involves 'patching things up' with crews who get caught up in this.

Either way, I guess you have to do what you have to do to survive nowadays

Like I said I'm sure they have them here but almost 9 years working at JFK and I have never seen one at least thats marked FOLLOW ME. Perhaps its because its not that complicated of an airport.

Not complicated for you, but pilots do get lost there. I saw a docu where a JFK ground controller had smoke coming out of his ears. ***turns off mike*** "Now I'll try to find some airplane that knows the airport so these guys can just follow."

When I was working a NFL Charter to DIA, the FBO sent out a Follow Me dune buggy to show us where to go. Also when we had to charter a Sourthern L-100-30 to haul 2 engines down to MEX, we made a make shift Follow Me Tug to guide them in to the hanger area to make loading easier.

I see them more often at airports serving more GA. The major carriers don't tend to change which airports they operate into as quickly or as often, making follow me cars less necessary.

I have a feeling that at JFK the "Follow Me" vehicles would be one of the many PANYNJ Suburbans and/or pickup trucks which have a TON of flashing yellow lights on top and can communicate w/ the tower as they handle the grounds mx so they are on taxiways and runways frequently.

One of my favorite moments ever was when I was 19, working at Daytona Beach's Jet Center, I was in a 'folllow me golf cart' and a Huey came in to land. I met him at the the taxi way from 25L and had a Huey 50' above and a little behind me follow me to the ramp. I will never forget that and as an aviation nut and esp since my Dad flew and still flies Hueys it was awesome.

The Pick-ups that Port has, have extending arms that contain lights. They are used as follow me vehicles...

They are commonly used to direct foreign nationals...

Hey, I was young and innocent...    I just did what the boss said to do.

Besides if you read below the big "FOLLOW ME", below it it said "...to (insert the name of our FBO)"

We provide a Follow Me as part of our Airfield Ops duties at STN, usually for unfamiliar aircraft, sometimes as a requirement for certain parts of the airfield or code F aircraft.

Sorry guys, I am somewhat cautious about what I post online about my work; these things have a strange habit of being used against you somehow.

Let's just say that SOME crews have a hard time accepting the fact that they were simply just playing "follow the leader". I can't blame them, usually (since there are many more important things happening when you land), but to blame others is simply unjustified.

Its a big yellow car with flashing lights on it and a sign that says "follow me" on the roof, but that's not important right now...

---

But in all seriousness, basically, if an aircraft is unfamiliar with an airport's layout, they can follow a ground vehicle which will guide them to the gate or parking position.

Ah that make sense. I don't know why I couldn't figure that out on my own.

I guess this is one of those cases where there ARE stupid questions

It can be any vehicle with a FOLLOW ME sign on it. Ours at DAB was a golf cart. Doesn't matter so long as its a vehicle with that sign that unfamiliar aircraft can follow to where they need to be parked.

Here at MAN our 'follow me' vehicles are the Airfield operations guys... or Marshallers if you like. They make sure everything is in order on the airfield, marshall aircraft onto stand and also provide unfamiliar pilots with follow me's.

"Follow Me" service is the bread and butter of my job, we take all visiting aircraft to parking with F-M trucks (ford ranger pickups) were a marshaller is waiting, park and chock and attach GPU if required. Start up, de-chock, marshall out is also provided. 8 man crew, 12 hours on 12 hours off at the busiest single runway airport in the world. We also escort resident a/c being towed and vehicles who need escort on the airfield.
