Crew Time Out Question

I have a question regarding airline crew time rules. Last Thursday, I was flying on UA 818 from BDL-ORD. The aircraft for BDL-ORD was coming from IAD and was delayed there because of storms. At about 8 p.m. that night, UA 818 was canceled. The agents said the crew would be over time if they worked the flight. But when the aircraft came in at about 8:30 p.m., it still flew a positioning flight back to ORD. I'm wondering what crew would have been available to fly this flight or would it have been the original crew? Are they allowed to fly an empty plane being over time, but not a full one?

Don't know the specifics of this particular flight but my guess is this: If the airplane was flown from BDL to ORD on a positioning flight then I would suspect that it was the FA's that were illegal and the Cockpit crew still had duty day available to fly the airplane. At UAL the pilots and flight attendants are not paired together; ie the can meet at a hub from different trips. Also, the FA's have lower threshold for duty day limits than the pilots (contractually negotiatied). Thus it is entirely possible the FA's stayed in BDL and the pilots continued on to ORD to keep the airplane in the rotation.

Finally, appreciate your posting the question. Sorry your flight schedule was disrupted. The weather in the NE has been brutal this summer it seems. I know I have spent a large portion of many of my days sitting in the run up block or waiting at the gate due to the new DOT regs.

A crew can also fly the airplane past 121 duty limits under Part 91. This means leaving any revenue producing item (pax or cargo) at the gate. It all depends on whether the crew is willing to do it, and the work rules spelled out in the CBA.

Yeah, I had quite a bit of change to my itinerary last Thursday evening. I was originally routed BDL-IAD-CMH, both on the last flight segments of the day for the respective cities. I got an EasyUpdate call at about 6 p.m. notifying me IAD-CMH was canceled. When I got to the airport, UA 818 was delayed to ORD so I could change my schedule to that flight, then connect to the last ORD-CMH flight of the day. Once I got to the gate, UA 818 was pushed further back and finally canceled, leaving me at BDL for the night. I ended up heading home on CO BDL-EWR-CMH in the morning. The CO check-in agent didn't have the easiest time with that either since UA issued me a paper ticket!

I knew leaving at 7:45 p.m. on a summer night to IAD meant the on-time chances were probably pretty slim, so I was definitely ready for it. The BDL-IAD flight actually did end up getting out pretty close to on-time from the gate because the a/c came from ORD where there was no weather.

I read a post about a WN bird being ferried from DHN to HOU and the crew must have been timing out so they landed at MSY, pulled up to the jetway where two fresh pilots who were deadheaded from HOU got on, then the plane took off a few minutes later empty, so guess even under Part 91, WN would not do it.
