Dual Powered Aircraft

Tue Sep 14, 2010 4:32 pm

After watching a P2V Neptune fire-fighting aircraft and noting both piston and jet engines on the aircraft, I was wondering how these types of aircraft are fueled. The B-36 and some Fairchild transports with both types of engines come to mind. Is one type of "special" fuel used for both types of engines, are both types of engine rigged to run on the same fuel, or are there two different types of fuel loaded?

They use Avgas in those little engines. This thread should help  http://www1.airliners.net/aviation-forums/military/read.main/18719/

The C-123 Provider and C-119 Flying Boxcar also has the same setup.

Side note: The PT-6 and Garrett TPE-331 can also run Avgas for a limited time as 'emergency fuel'.

turbins in theroy can runn off anything that can burn. I remember hearing when trying out gas turbin cars they did an exercise of running the car off whiskey then the engeners came to there senses after $100 and decided to drink the wiskey.

Not in theory, they CAN run on anything that burns, even solid fuels. Gas turbine locomotives have been made to run on coal dust.

However, whether it is certified to do so or cheap enough is another question altogether....

In the other hand piston engines are extremely picky on fuel type when compared to turbines.
