How Hard For An Airline To Transition A To B

Mon Nov 22, 2010 4:18 am

How hard, and costly, is it for an airline to make a transition from an Airbus type to a Boeing type ? Or, does the new type's benefits outweigh the cost of transition ?
Or does it really depend on the airline's financial level ?
For example, UL currently has some 16yr old 343s in its fleet. As they haven't ordered the 350 either, 772 comes out as the best replacement choice. But is this an economically viable move to make ?
UL switched to 332 from L1011 in 1999 and currently operates an all Airbus fleet of 320,332 and 343. Past operated types include 707,742,732,733 and L1011, but they have been all Airbus since 2000.
The opinions above are solely my own and do not express those of my employers or clients.

An airline would only switch if the savings outweigh the costs - would you buy a new car if it was going to perform exactly the same as your current car, but cost thousands to switch?

Typically Airbus or Boeing will offer incentives such as free training, or offer to buy the existing aircraft off them at favourable prices in order to make the transition costs more bareable. I believe Airbus paid for the training of Easyjet pilots to get them to switch, and Boeing have bought A340's off airlines before to get them to buy 777s (Air Canada ?)
