WN/FL Cockpit

Just curious. It is my understanding that the WN cockpits are configured to replicate the classics for commonality. Is this true? If so, is this just a software mod in the 73NG or are there physical changes that are not standard in the 73NG. Also how is this going to work with the 737s that WN will acquire from FL?

I thought that WN was going to the FL style anyway to get commonality with the new flat panels going into the 733.

From what I understand the WN 737s have the same LCD displays as that in the FL planes, what WN did was have the displays display the flight information in the style of the classic 737s (basically a software change).

Thanks! So my question then is will WN switch all of the FL 73Gs over to the WN style or will WN finally make the switch. To me is seems crazy to stick with the classic style. But then again they are already having to have a new pilot type with the 717. This would probably cause them to have a third; A 737 Classic, 73G, and 717.

I would think WN will switch to the FL style. About 150 of WN's 733s will be getting new glass cockpits which will look similar to the new NG style panels, so don't see why after the refitting, they would still stay with the steam gauge layouton the 73G.

I've also heard that WN is considering retiring many of the remaining -300's in the fleet due to concerns over skin fatigue... (witness the WN 2294 incident). It appears that earlier plans to add Row 44 wifi to the -300's have either been temporarily shelved or dropped all toegther.

We already have. All of our NG's are configured with the same PFD/ND displays that are pictured on the AirTran 7373's. We made the change back in April as part of our complete flight ops overhaul in preparation for our RNP approach certification that will be implemented in January. AT's and VNAV are now fully operational on all NG's. The classics are getting VNAV (no AT's) and as 71Zulu pointed out, appx 150 will get the new LAD's (Large Area Displays).

ETOPS training soon to follow  

And to answer the OP's question, yes, the display change is a simple software mod. It was accomplished during night mx at most (if not all) of our mx bases - taking appx 1 hr per A/C. If I remember correctly, they planned on roughly 6 weeks to get them all converted, but had it done in under 3.

Sure. It was a 4 step process taking over 2 years to complete. Phase 1 was completed in December of 2008, which was the intro to AT's. Step 2 introduced VNAV above 10k feet and was finished by Aug 2009. Step 3 was the biggest shift, incorporating the ND/PFD displays, full use of VNAV and AT's, as well as GPS/VNAV approaches. Step 4 is now complete and waiting the "turn on" date sometime in January. This last phase allows turning RNP/GPS approaches down to essentially CAT 1 minimums - pretty cool stuff. I think Alaska pioneered this up in, well, Alaska, a few years back - but it has yet to make it to the lower 48.

All Continental 737 pilots have been RNP trained and certified for a couple of years now (includes domestic and foreign operations).
