Shift Of Magnetic North Means Airport Changes

Fri Jan 07, 2011 2:27 am

http://www2.tbo.com/content/2011/jan...agnetic-north-pole-impacts-tampa-/

This article discusses the remarking of the runways as to their runway numbers at TPA airport to reflect the changes in the compass headings due to the shifts of the magnetic north over the years. The Magnetic North is located close the the Arctic Circle in Northern Canada, but has been shifting about 40 miles (65 Km) a year toward Russia.

Have there been other airports that have changed their runway designations (like 18/36 to 17/35) or the like as TPA has done to reflect the shift in the magnetic North?

Too numerous to list. BHM and ROA come to mind.

7 days to re-number the left-side main parallel runway. Anyone know how the planes coming in from the south approach the right-side parallel runway? Is it a sidestep to avoid flying over the noise-sensitive Palma Ceia area in South Tampa?

SXM changed Rwy 9 to 10 just prior to a trip I took on Thanksgiving 08. I didn't even know it was done until I saw the new markings.

I don't think the noise restrictions are in place because of these circumstances. I saw a WN 737 doing a standard ILS approach for 36R right over Beach Park in South Tampa on the way home from school today.

AMS renumbered from 1/19 to 18/36 several years ago when the Polderbaan was opened.

CLE renumbered their 5/23s to 6/24s about 10 years or so ago. 1G0 (Wood County Regional, Bowling Green, Ohio, USA) renumbered their 9/27 to 10/28 about 6 years ago.

Airports in N. Canada near the Magnetic North Pole avoid this problem by measuring and marking runways using True North. I believe runway 19 would be marked 19T

IAH went from 14's/32's to the current 15's/33's about 10 years back, but the mag var changes did not impact the east/west parallels at that time.

LOC Runway 1R, RNAV 1R, or visual.

The ILS 1L does not have side-step minimums, but does have circling mins, so it would be more clearance semantics!!!

TRD changed from 10/28 to 9/27 some time between opening during WWII and now.

MMU changed from 12/30 to 11/31 sometime in the 60s iirc. I have a book on the history of MMU and was surprised to find that the runway changed. Interesting 5/23 has always been 5/23

I believe it starts north of the 60. Can be tricky to do an IFR approach if you haven't done many up there the variation is great.

MAN changed a couple of years ago... 24L/R - 06L/R was changed to 23L/R - 05L/R

13/31 you mean? Probably no US airports have ever decreased their numbers?

Has any airport changed twice yet?

Just wonder if there are any airports with parallel runways doing that?
Would there be 19TR/TL ?

I haven't seen any. Most of them are gravel anyways.

A few years back, ANC's parallels went from 6/24 to 7/25 a few years back (I'm thinking around 2006). The N/S runway did not change designations.

In Malta we changed a few years ago;

LMML Runways were 32/14 - 24/06, they are now 31/13 - 23/05.

GFK's E/W parallels changed from 8/26 to 9/27 L/R 2 years ago. The N/S parallels are due to shift from 17/35 L/R to 18/36 L/R soon.

MSP's parallels changed from 11/29 L/R to 12/30 L/R around 15 years ago.

I am in Tampa and while driving to the work the other day I saw that 18R was closed and no idea why but read an article in the paper stating why. I had never heard of this being done or even considered how that would impact runways after hearing that the poles change. When the story was on the local TV news they mentioned that Atlanta was to begin next year.

I found a couple of good maps showing how the magnetic declination varies across the world on Wikipedia:
Low res:

High res, including annual change:

I just read about this on Yahoo an hour ago; normally, I tend to take most things I hear about on Yahoo "with a grain of salt"
however, after reading the scientific explanation behind it, I'm inclined to think they really have it "nailed" this time.

That article made a big deal about closing the runway to repaint it. Seems like repainting it would be the easiest part of the whole deal. I'd think the biggest challenge would be updating every chart and database correctly to reflect the change at the same time the runway number changes.

COS just changed 12/30 to 13/31 a few months ago. The parallel 17/35's are still the same.

DEN will be interesting if it is ever completely built out. The master plan calls for 8 parallel north/south runways ranging from 15/33 R&L to 18/36 R&L. The correlation between runway number and magnetic heading goes way down there.

LHR's two 09-27 runways were originally 10-28.
