Weird 737 Jetway Ops

Tue Feb 08, 2011 4:17 am

I've been looking at pics of 737s at jetways and a lot of times the retractable hood that covers pax as they first come out is not attached to the plane. why is this???

They have had a few cases of worn out bolts in the cover puncturing the aircraft skin. Also the cover is strong and on some planes have knocked off antennas.

Not entirely true, although this is possible, it would be noticed on all airplanes using that particular jetway.

The reason is because there are Pitot tubes and an angle-of-attack sensor very close to the L1 door, and some canopies are wide enough that they may hit and damage them.

Maverick thanks for the comment about the sensors. I forgot about them. The wider canopies on some jetways just get in the way of sensors antennas etc. Some jetway canopies are also not rolled over on CRJ's because of the roof antenna in proximity. The simple ground level RJ gates at Montreal Dorval on the end of the transborder wing for example had to be reworked so they wouldn't knock off the antennas.

Interestingly enough, the reason for the hood isn't only for keeping the weather out but there's a safety aspect with respect to fire. IIRC the hood is designed to provide 5 minutes-ish of fire protection before burning through.

To Avoid damage to the Aircraft Antennas/Probes in close proximity.
Same concept applies to a few specific shaped Stepladders too.
