Question About Extra Flight Crew On Long Flights

Wed Mar 30, 2011 9:45 pm

Please redirect me or delete if this has been discussed to death before.

I am just curious to know how long a flight has to be before it requires an extra pilot on the flight deck to cover rest periods.

Thanks in advance for any replies

In the USA, any flight scheduled to be over 8 hours requires one extra pilot, and more than 12 hours requires a fourth pilot. Of course all this may change depending on how the new flight time/duty time rules play out this summer.

One smooth landing is skill. Two in a row is luck. Three in a row and someone is lying.

HAL,

Do you have a link or any info on the new proposed limitations?

Also depends on time zone changes and what time you report for duty etc...As above, FAA requires three crew for flights +8 hours but our crew have done 11 hour flights with just the two of them.

Have a look at the CAA CAP371 document. Bit of bed time / toilet reading for you:

Europe (EASA/EU OPS) has a max duty time of 13 hours (extendable in case of WX/Mechanical delays for another hour at Captains discretion). In case of 3 pilots (augmented flight crew) the max duty time increases to 18 hours, whereby 12 hours stick time may not be exceeded.
