Is There Such A Thing As Winter Airplane Tires?

Fri Apr 22, 2011 1:39 am

Cars can be fitted with different tire profiles for different climatic conditions.

Is this also the case for aircraft? If so what is used for intercontinental flights?

Small GA aircraft sometimes change tires for different surfaces (e.g. tundra tires), but I've never heard of them changing just for climatic conditions. I have never heard of large airliners changing tires for weather conditions...airliners modify their landing distance calculations based on runway surface condition (dry/wet/ice/snow/standing water/etc.) rather than changing tires.
