RR Trent 772 Engine Capability

Hello
could RR Trend 772 ( set on. A330s ) have powered A340-500 or -600 ( instead of Trend 553 and Trend 556 ) ?
Any answer will be welcome

Hi Danny

Well here is my facts and research:

Well first its Trent but...

Possibly. The A340-500 and 600 use four engines instead of two (I suppose you already know that... I hope ) and the Trent 772 was only designed and certified for the A330. The Trent 700 is rated at 71,100lbf (316 kN) when the Trent 553 & 556 are rated at 53,000lbf. Also the Trent 772 weighs more than the 553 and 556. But they are both the same size in many factors. And The design of the A330 and A340 are very similar in many ways including the wings

Here is my final answer:

It would be able to power the A340-500 but with casualties like range, speed etc. which basically makes it a new A340 model called the A340-700      .

The A340-600, No because it is too much of a different aircraft in size, range, power, MTOW etc. If the Trent 772 were to power that aircraft I would file restraining orders for 2 km against them .

In very simple terms yes, but it would win no orders as it would be inefficient.

The fact is we designed the Trent 500s specifically for the mission profiles identified by Airbus for the A340-5/600 plus, with each engine iteration a lot of care and attention goes into improving its performance and reducing weight and cost.

I recall being highly amused at the time when a fellow A-Net enthusiast was exclaiming that the Trent 500 was simply a Trent 700 with a new fan... I suspect if one were to delve into the BOMs for each engine the commonaltiy could be traced to a few % and most of that would be standard parts such as bolts, nuts etc.

If anything, it could have the same fan as the 700 (at least the diameter is the same). But that's only speculation on my part.

Maybe you could explain again why you think it could power the -500 but not the -600, because it doesn't make a lot of sense.
