Questions About Chelsea Food Services

Thu May 05, 2011 10:23 pm

I have a few questions about Chelsea Food Services, CO/UA's in-house catering unit.

My first question is: Has UA switched to Chelsea (from LSG Sky Chefs) at IAH yet? I know that there were indeed plans for it.

My second question: Will UA flights at DEN switch to Chelsea? I believe that UA currently uses LSG Sky Chefs at DEN, however, Chelsea also has kitchens there. However, considering that Chelsea serves fewer airlines (mostly Frontier) at DEN, would Chelsea's facility be large enough to handle all of UA's flights there?

Now, my final question: are there any plans to open Chelsea kitchens at the other UA hubs (ORD, IAD, SFO, LAX)? UA currently uses Gate Gourmet at all of those hubs, CO uses Gate Gourmet at ORD, LAX, and SFO but uses LSG Sky Chefs at IAD.

LAX will be a special case, AirFayre is a new company and started business solely on winning UA from GG a while back and I am sure GG will lose CO at LAX to the Non-Union AirFayre set up.

Chelsea still works at HNL, so Chelsea probably will take UA from GG HNL (but most of the food is down lined from the mainland anyway)

Any new bidder can easily find a warehouse space or get something prepared upon winning a contract, so they are flexible in accepting the new business.

I would not be surprised if GG loses UA at SFO to LSG or maybe Airfayre can come up.

I have heard that GG at SFO has had a terrible record and been running over budget for a long time.
