What Is The Purpose Of The Solid Red Window...

Mon May 16, 2011 8:55 pm

...on Boeing test aircraft??
I have seen what looks like a red plate? covering over a passenger window near the front of the aircraft on the 777, 787 and now the 748.
I would really like to know the reason behind this??

I'd like to know, too. The A380 that visited BDL a few years ago had the same thing.

I'm not sure I know what you are talking about (someone else might be more knowledgeable), however I think it is for flight test instrumentation. They will replace a window with a plate with auxilary sensors attached such as additional pitot tubes or other equipment needed to check out systems.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

That's the explanation in Replies 17 and 18 in this older thread on the same subject.

The plugs are also good for routing wiring to outside of the fuselage during testing.
