Why So Few Minorities In Aviation?

Sat Jun 25, 2011 7:22 pm

I've never met a pilot that was of another race. I've met an ATC that was hispanic but other than that... I think it would be nice to see a more eclectic group of people in aviation. What are your guesses as to the reason?

My guess is that there are few minorities because they are......you guessed it, the minority. I'm sure we'll see more latin american pilots in the US as time progresses. I'd guess the mix of workers in aviation is very similar to the cultural mix of the country.

Lots of them at my airline, and my last airline. Easily in proportion to the general population.

At my airline about half the flight crew members and flight attendants I see are African American. Also, there are a significant amount of individuals belonging to other races.
My opinions, statements, etc. are my own and do not have any association with those of any employer.

Well, here in Asia we have plenty of Asian pilots.

I think it really depends on where you live. Lived in SoCal for the last 10 years and there is plenty diversity in all aviation realated fields.

Here in Spain we have lot of people from South America. I havent seen yet any pilot or flight attendant from there in any of our national airlines.
However, you rarely will see them working at banks or hospitals either. I am sure that we will in 10 years.

Well, here in SoCal, I've found aviation to be pretty diverse- I see minorities often.

My guess is that the reason "you" don't see many minority pilots is "you"! Travel and you will find pilots (and cabin crews) of every nationality.

I work in the bizjet sector and have to say I agree with the OP. In corporate aviation flight crews of a minority are a rare sight.

Perhaps 10% women, if that. I meet the occasional Hispanic pilot, I live in California, but it's very uncommon to see an Asian or African American.

Why should business aviation be any different than airline aviation?

BTW, Wall Street Journal reporting 48.6% of newborns in the US are of minority race. Soon to be the majority.

I never said I wouldn't find any or that there were none. I said there were few. And I'm sure I will find few compared with the majority in aviation worldwide. Not that any of this is bad.

In the US, the number of Afro-American pilots is an extrememly small percentage - something less than 1%!

I would expect it to be low, but not that low. It's no doubt associated with percentages that are college educated, but even that is a much higher percentage (20-40%?).

Women I assume is much higher. I've already seen 2 female pilots sitting here at TPA in the last 30 minutes.

Could it be based on the Financial/educational strengths of certain persons from certain communities.

In college I had a roommate who was black (This gentleman is still a very good friend of mine), and he is currently a captain for SkyWest. I have seen a few black pilots out there, but they aren't very common. Black Flight Attendants are a lot more common, especially at the regional level.

The thing is, Flight Training is expensive, and as much as I hate to say it, minorities generally struggle enough to make ends meet, let alone afford flight training. But there are some out there, and they are great people to have in aviation as well.

EK has cabin crew from over 100 countries and pilots from quite a few.

I remember in the earlier days of CX they heavily advertised that they had cabin crew from every Asian country they served.
