Not flown into LHR
for a while now, but do fly into LGW
on a regular basis.
For me there are two distinct parts to your question. The airport itself (runways, taxiways, terminals and staff) and the ATC aspect (approach, tower and ground).
as an airport. Hmmn! I don't want to complain too much, but it is dated and hampered by being a single runway operation. Fortunately the BAA was forced to sell LGW
to a new owner, which will hopefully mean some changes and improvements. Like Zeke says a bulldozer would be handy at LHR
, but there are some works going on at LGW
and will take a long long time before it's improved.
The single runway issue and the lack of Government vision on UK aviation is a problem and makes for a busy time, but it is extremely well handled by ATC. Unfortunately when the weather turns nasty, so does the experience of LGW
, but fortunately the weather is fairly stable most of the time, and snow and ice events are rare.
UK ATC is a dream compared to some other parts of Europe. Don't get me started on Spanish ATC. To me Spanish ATC are environmental criminals and conducting acts of treason on the Spanish economy. However the NATS in the UK are extremely professional and do afantastic job. Always a pleasure. They know how to make the most efficient use of the airspace and have never had to make a go-around yet due to spacing on final.
