Upgrade An Aircraft, C441 Conq. II

Sat Sep 03, 2011 11:59 pm

Good evening guys and gals,

One night, I was having a flying money-no-problem dream, I had my own Cessna 441 Conquest II.
I really digg this aircraft, this was the first and only "official private plane" ride I had a few years ago and ever since I wanted one ^^

So I got a few questions, and how much would it cost?

1) Upgrade the engines to more fuel efficient and lighter engines. And would it be possible/worth to choose engines with lower HP but use a gearbox to keep up the speed?

2) Upgrade the cockpit instruments to a LCD type cockpit?

3) If you could upgrade the engines to lighter and fuel efficiency would that mean that since the aircraft would become lighter you could extend the tanks and therefor got a longer range?

That's not how gearboxes work. You WILL loose speed if you take away HP regardless.

There are plenty of companies out there that do all of the above to older aircraft. Riley (now dead), Raisbeck, Cutter, to name but a few.

The problem with pimping out (relatively) older planes is that with the money you put into them you could very well buy a larger, faster, and newer aircraft.

Well in that case, I'd go for a proper turboprop, a King Air C90 GTx

An entirely new engine would be cost prohibitive. However, you can upgrade the TPE331s on a 441 to a newer standard (the -10 engines) which dramatically improves performance. It is a very common upgrade.

Already being done. Several C441s now have a three panel Avidyne system. Not the most advanced out there, but an impressive upgrade. The Garmin G600 is also available, though not as impressive in terms of screen area.

If you want to go 30 knots slower and burn 20-30% more gas to do it (relative to a 441 with TPE331-10 engines, the GTx is as fast or slightly faster than the 441 with old engines). Personally I'd rather give up a few inches of headroom and get there sooner!

That is it.

This is the Avidyne Install:

Is the panel photo of a 441?

Yes it is. Note "Conquest II" on the yokes.

Breaks down more, goes slower, engine out performance is a bit sketchy in some situations, and forces you to breathe through a tube if you want to go high. But that's the fun of it, right?

That's why I love our 404, it's actually challenging to fly, and we don't have an autopilot so we hand bomb everything.
