Some Questions About EK17.....

Mon Oct 03, 2011 8:42 pm

Hi fellow A-Netters

I am hoping that someone on here will be able to help me with my question regarding EK17. Firstly let me explain why I am asking this. I am a teacher of 11 year old pupils in a school in Derby and flight EK17 flies directly over our school most days on its way into Manchester.

We keep a flight log of whether the aircraft flies over our school (using flightradar24.com to track the route) and which aircraft flies it. If it is a nice day, we go out and watch the plane fly over. We will be using this data in our maths lessons and data handling and also hoping to write letters to Emirates.

I have a group of boys and girls who love looking at which aircraft fly over our school. It certainly helps having some glass panels in the roof   and I also enjoy it too!

So I am hoping that someone will be able to help with a couple of questions that my class have asked:

1) We have tried to find some pattern in the rostering of the aircraft used to fly the route, but can't work it out. There seems to be a group of A380s which fly the route, but is there anyone out there that could help?
2) What factors alter the route it takes? We know that if it flies over Prague, then it will fly over Amsterdam and then out over the North Sea (and not over our school)
3) What flight does the aircraft operate before EK17?
4) Does anyone know why the flight today was 4 hours late?
5) Is there anyone at Emirates that we could write to? My class love writing letters and would love to get some sort of reply.

Thanks for your help

Good luck with that one. There probably isn't much of a pattern there. The airplane is part of a fleet, and any particular airplane has a recurring pattern of inspections, some of which take them out of service at different flight hours, different days, etc. In addition, unscheduled maintenance (for example, a catering truck driver at MAN isn't careful, and damages a part on the aircraft beyond the repair capabilities of the mechanics at the ariport, leading to a flight cancellation, and a fresh A380 has to be sent from DXB) can have an effect. Or the plane which was originally scheduled to fly the flight to MAN can be moved to a different flight (like, for instance, JFK) at the last minute...also, much of this information is priveleged to people who need to know.

Winds aloft is the biggest driver, although airpsace closure, NAVAID failures (electronic, ground-based navigation aids, like a VOR station), airpsace congestion, and the whims of Eurocontrol can all affect an aircraft's routing

See my first response   I don't work for the airline, and I am not affiliated with anyone who does. I just put up one or two hypothetical examples of why it could have been late...

Hi emalad, great to finally find someone doing the same nerdy research as myself   (albeit at a different airport)
I actually once wrote a tool (must have been damn bored, haha) parsing acarsd.org and flightradar24 information and list the complete EK fleet usage, but once the temporary boredom was gone, had no time to "feed" the parser.
(I would appreciate, if anyone had a method to get all flightradar24 planes-in-the-air information of a whole day at once, not just at one specific time?)

To your questions:
1) Apart from configuration differences, there is absolutely no way forecast it, if your not one of the planning guys. You can only narrow it down to specific aircraft configurations, which for EK A380 there are only two (longhaul crewrest, and not longhaul, of which probably both are used for MAN)
2) Most probably wind (takeoff/land against wind, but cruise "with" the stream to save fuel), but also weather (avoid e.g. thunderstorms) and traffic planning, e.g. slots on specific routes due to congestion.
3) Point 1 answers it: Can not tell, could be any other A380 destination.
4) Sorry, no.
5) You guys really should fly EK a coupla times and get to know F/As. (For girls: maybe a captain? hehe) EK crew is very often very open to talk to and have lots of storys / information to tell. Better: Hook up with one   That would also solve point number 4) of yours....

Typically the Public Affairs department would handle this sort of thing: http://www.emirates.com/uk/english/a...public_affairs/public_affairs.aspx

There's no phone number listed but I would call Emirates and ask for details on how to contact Public Affairs.
