Question About This Stormy Take-off

Mon Oct 10, 2011 8:26 pm

I stepped on this video on youtube:

That looks pretty extreme to me. The plane apparently is a 763ER. So my question is: What are actually the limits for takeoffs? Was there much margin left, or was this relatively close to the limits? Looks scary to me...

The limiting is the crosswind. The more crosswind the worse it gets. The max crosswind component is different for every airplane. Usually it is somewhere around 30-35 knots roughly.
This limit reduces when the runway is wet, snowy, icy etc. Then it can go down to 5 knots...
It looks scary, but difficult to say if it is was out of limits or not.

This video has been EXTENSIVELY discussed in previous threads.

Like Wilco said, crosswind is normally limiting (though there may be more restrictive policies at some companies about gusts, taking off in proximity to unstable weather, etc.) There is nothing available to indicate that this takeoff was out of limits or unsafe.
