747-8 Upper Deck

Mon Nov 14, 2011 5:08 am

What is there in the upper deck of the 747-8 cargo variant? Looks like the upper deck is considerably shorter than the the upper deck of a 747-400...is there space for cargo? Or crew stuff (rest area etc)?

What about in the pax version...surely they an only get a handful of seats up there?

The upper deck of the factory-built freighters have always been of the shorter variety. In many freighters, there's a small galley, some seats (usually standard business class seats), a lavatory and sometimes a bunk or two up there.

For the 747-200 Boeing introduced the SUD variant (SUD = stretched upper deck) which became standard on the 747-300 and -400. This is carried on in the 747-8i which has a stretched upper deck with a lot more seating than would be available in the freighters.

IIRC, the only difference between the -300 and the -200 was the stretched upper deck. Some -200's had the SUD modification done after manufacture (I believe all of them KLM birds?). However, some 747-100SR's were manufactured with the SUD

The freighter has a shorter upper deck because the floor interferes with the cargo bay height. On conversions, I've seen where they truncated as well.

Not that few actually but it all depends on config. Most airliner have business class up there so not a huge amount of seats. For example BA 747-400s have 20 seats and CX 747-400s has 22.

Corsair has mixed business and economy upstairs in a 2-3 for biz (pretty tight compared to a traditional airline) and 3-3 for economy. 24 business and 18 economy.

If you go all economy on a -400 you can probably squeeze in 13 rows, which is 78 people. The -8 will have a longer upper deck so more sardines.

Lufthansa used to have its first class in the 747 on the upper deck. old F config on 744 was 16 seats on the upper deck. new 744 config is 8 seats each with a bed.
my question is will LH use the additional space of the -8 to put 2 more F seats up there or will it stick to the 8 seat F class, as it is on all the other long haulers and use the space for example for a big restroom like on the A380? are there any rumours yet?

8 F class seats will be in the front section of the main deck. Upper deck will be C class only. This is no rumour, that is confirmed.

Almost every airline puts 3 pairs of 2 seats in the upper deck of the freighters. There is a small galley with an oven and coffee maker. There is a lavatory as well. And of course there is the drop down staircase to the main deck. The flight deck is also reasonably spacious.

At a typical pitch of 60 inches, an airline can fit about 32 seats in the upperdeck of the 747-8 compared to 24 on the 400.

Yup. And 100's with a 10 window short hump, 200s with the three window setup as well. Leave it to Boeing to make it absolutely impossible to be sure which 747 classic series you're looking at, lol.

Only 2, both for JAL.

Lol...I thought I'd seen it all. I love showing off to my friends about what variant an airplane is down to the engine type. But if I saw one of those I woulda been thrown way off. Hence my Continuous love for this site.

10 KLM 742's where converted to 743 standard. 2 UTA.
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

IIRC, the max for the upper deck is around 89 pax. JAL's -400Ds had 86 seats in the upper deck.
