How Long Do EK Crew Stay In America?

Sun Dec 04, 2011 8:47 pm

I have always wondered how long EK crews stay in LA, San Fran, Houston, New York, Toronto. Thanks for the info!

One of my good friends is an FA for EK on their A380s, usually flying to YYZ, sometimes to JFK. When he's in town, he usually has a solid day on the ground and one night, sometimes two.

Layovers are 24 hours to JFK, IAH, (DFW) and 48 hours to (SEA), SFO, LAX. YYZ is dependend on the day of arrival - It's 48hrs. on Monday and Wednesday arrivals, 72hrs. on the Friday arrival (no flights on Sat and Sun).

Obviously it depends on which day and at what time the crew's outbound flight is scheduled for. EK has daily service from JFK to DXB, so chances are its crews lay over there for 24-36 hours, give or take. If service is twice or three-times weekly, layovers might be longer.

Only a week or so ago I wrote an article about this as one of my "Ask the Pilot" columns....

On international routes the typical layover lasts between 24 and 48 hours.  They can sometimes be shorter, but just as often they are longer, especially in the low season or in cities that don't have daily service. I've been fortunate enough to enjoy four or five days at a time in some pretty special places.  My Flickr archives serve as a sort of layover photologue...

Accommodations for international crews are usually four or five-star properties in the heart of the city (Marriotts and Hyatts are my favorite, in case you're wondering).

In the old day captains were routinely given a suite. This still happens in some places.

Once, in Brussels after an especially late arrival and with our normal rooms occupied, I was given a deluxe apartment with a six-person hot tub and eight-place dining table.

No. You can't leave the country on a layover.

EK serves YYZ on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I am guessing the crew flies DXB-YYZ and then YYZ-DXB two days later. That makes for about 48 hours on the ground (arrival in YYZ around 1500L and departure around 2100L).

Insurance reasons. They can leave the city with their supervisor's permission (ie visit LAS on a LAX layover), but they couldn't party in Tijuana instead. Other airlines may have different policies in place though.

That must be an EK rule, as a member of this site, BA F/A to SAN visited Tijuana recently. And anyway, Emirates202 corrected himself to say Niagra

Who is "they?" My friend, * I * am a pilot who flies intercontinental routes regularly, and we have no such restriction.

That's not to say such restrictions don't exist, but it would depend on the airline.

Leaving the country would also depend on visa requirements. As a UK crew member, we do not need visas for entry (apart from the USA and Russia - there may be a few other countries) we enter on a general declaration, a form issued by the company with our passport details on. This also shows which flight we arrive on and which we depart on, and we may only enter or leave the country for those flights. If we were to leave the country on a layover, our gen dec would be invalid and we would need the appropriate visa applicable for UK passport holders. For the BA crew going from San Diego to Tijuana, as the US requires crew to hold a personal visa, they would leave and enter the country as any other tourist.

I considered that more of an individual restriction, rather than a company imposed one as EK currently employs board crew from 162 nations and counting. It's not unthinkable that there is US crew on a YYZ layover to whom entry into the US would logically not pose a problem. Different story about Pakistani crew, obviously.

That being said, I am actually unsure about the guidelines on inner EU travel. I shall inquire that first thing tomorrow morning.

Not quite.... IAH is a 48hr layover and DFW will be the same.

JFK is 24hrs for the B77W crew and 31hrs for the A380 crew.

Except three days and over 72 hours for the crew that arrives YYZ on Friday and leaves on Monday.

I was working with a Canadian charter airline, we were delivering a plane out of D-Check heading back to YYZ. We had a planned stop in STN for fuel. I cleared customs on the general declaration and after getting fuel and catering we were catching a quick meal before takeoff.

There was a page for the VP of Maintenance that was on the flight with us. To make a long story short, the airplane was being diverted to CDG to pick up a load of passengers from another operator that aircraft had gone tech. But there would be no room for me. So I took a bus to Heathrow bought a ticket to LAX for the next day.

The next morning after a night in a hotel, I checked my bag and headed to the gate. But at passport control the fun started, seems my passport said I had never entered the UK. I was taken away by a nice lady and put in a small room, about 10 minutes later a gentleman came in a we talked. I told them general declaration and STN he left and about 20 minutes later came back. Said everything was OK but that I would have to be escorted to the gate and someone would be with me until I boarded the plane to LAX. Seems they didn't want me to buy any duty free for some reason?

Air Canada's Flight crews only get a 24 hr layover on the YYZ-HKG flights. I think that is very short layover considering that they spend 30 hrs in the air and only 24 hrs on the ground in HKG.
