Which Russian Aircraft Is The Most Advanced?

Sat Jan 07, 2012 3:36 pm

Beyond Western planes, little is known about current Russian ones.
Does anyone know which Russian plane is the most advanced and automated?
Many thanks!

I think the Sukhoi Superjet. Full of western avionics.

Currently Sukhoi Superjet and then Ukrainian An-148. Basically you can go chronologically.

I'd say it is the Sukhoi T-50 PAK-FA,

The Tu-204 is also very modern, bit classic looking but on the avionics side very modern.

That is a newly modernised version though, not sure if yet in service.

Original 204 is 90s technology, somewhere between 757 and 737NG.

The 757 is far advanced beyond the 737NG in its systems and systems displays.

The only thing more advanced about the 737NG is the primary flight display and navigation display.

Back 10 years ago I was based in CIA, takimng care of a B757. Every morning there was a Tu-204 parked beside my B757, operating for TNT.
I got to know the crews and the engineers and had several opportunities to have a good look at the aircraft.
Technologically the Tu-204 is located between the B757 and the A320.
It has full fly-by-wire as well as a full glass cockpit (AFAIK designed by Honeywell). But it still has the F/E position, even though the captain told me that the F/E was not really required and just introduced due to some Soviet certification requirement, which demanded a F/E for an aircraft of this size. This requirement has now been dropped and the successor, the Tu-214, doesn´t have the F/E position anymore.

What was their experience in terms of reliability and cost of operation? Overall quality of the workmanship?

The crew told me that the Tu-204 was at the time the most cost efficient aircraft in the TNT fleet. as for the dispatch reliabilty and workmanship, the aircraft looked ok to me. Generally Russian aircraft are built stronger than western aircraft and are easier to maintain, though they might look in places a bit "rustic".
As the crew told me, the weak points of Russian aircraft design were the engines (higher fuel consumption), which for the the Tu-204 was partially solved by using RR RB21 engines, and the avionics, which again was solved by employing a western avionics manufacturer, but for structures and aerodynamics the Russians are very much advanced.
