How Does Heathrow T5 Gate Assignments Work?

Wed Jan 11, 2012 10:15 am

Hello everyone

I have a question regarding the gate assignements at LHR T5.

I know that most long haul flights are from T5B and T5C and most European flights are from T5A.

However within the last 4 weeks I have flown three times from ZRH or to ZRH and it seems that the flights all arrived and left from T5B. This however was not the case in the past years since T5 is in operation. It seems that more and more European flights are operating out of T5B or 5C.

Do they choose certain European destinations, which depart more often from 5B or 5C was I just unlucky to always arrive and depart from 5B?

Thanks for the input.

It really just depends on where the aircraft arrives.
This is done by stand planners who have a mass of information at their hands.

When you went from a gates before did you use the busses alot?

Euro flights can use any gate in T5, so A B and C. Since the opening of C a lot of coaching has been able to stop, though it still goes on now and then. The only flights guaranteed to go from A are Domestic services. Todays 714 is on a A gate today for example. There is no set plan station ZRH will go from A all the time, or JFK will be in B. A sees quiet a few longhaul deps, mainly 767 routes, but the far end does see a 747 normally.

Short haul 767s are more likely to use T5B & T5C than the Airbus fleet, but there's no hard & fast rule/policy. Airbus flights from the satellites are usually the first departures of the day where the aircraft has nightstopped LHR & the last arrivals of the day. As a full time short haul crew member (I only work on the Airbus fleet) I do 1, maximum 2, arrival or departure a month from B & C.....any more is unlucky & uncommon.

Sorry to head off-topic, but has their been any more mention of relocating the fuel farm to allow for a T5D? Now that IAG has begun to acquire BMI, I'd have thought it would be ever more appealing to to BA, if not BAA, to consider a third satellite.

I see, no until now the only time I have been bussed from the plane was once arriving from SFO on BA. That was the only time, as otherwise I always boarded through the normal jetway. I thought maybe they changed the gate assignements since T5C is operational and the Spanish flights shifted to T5.

Thanks for this interesting insight. I will be in LHR again next WED, so hopefully I will arrive at T5A.

Ok thanks for your reply. I shall be arriving next WED on the BA 719 at 7.55PM. I am not sure if the plane then does another flight, however this means that most probably I will arrive at B or C again if the plane nightstops? Although I arrived at LHR at 5AM two weeks ago and T5A was also full of planes which nightstopped it seems.

Thanks to all for their feedback!

The majority of European flights are still from T5A I think and there is about 6 at T3 which are going to be transferred to T5 this year.

In answer to your question, it will all depend on how busy T5 is at that time and how many gates are available. If the plane is an Airbus and won't be departing again that evening then it probably will go to an A gate if there's one available. If the plane is then not scheduled till a later departure the next day then there is a chance that it could get moved to the maintenance block for more space at T5. It will most probably just depend on the gates available at T5 when you land.

Hope this helps!
