Airports With Worst Runway Condition In The World

Fri Feb 17, 2012 3:29 pm

Which are the airports with runways in really poor condition that you've flown to and how was it? I've heard back in the 1990's that SVO and DEL were among the worse... Thank you for sharing your experience on this topic.

FRA is pretty bad at times as well. There were times where we weren't allowed to begin the take off run at the beginning of runway 18 due to the very bad condition. Even a Condor 757 had to reject the take off due to the bad runway.

It is a little better now, but it feels still very rough.

Isn't one of the IST runways supposed to be rather dangerous, mostly because of bad surface+runway profile?
I seem to recall it being involved in more than one landing mishap, I think even one of the resident Anet pilots, who
flies for Turkish ,complaining about it.

That runway was fixed (resurfaced) a year or two ago. Old 6-24, new 5-23 runway.

UHPP Kamchatka Petropavlosk is horrible. Concrete runway with huge seams between slabs that will jar your teeth out. Most thankful to get her in the air during that takeoff.

Cluj (CLJ/LRCL) is pretty wild. Bumpy, crap paving.. Timisoara is not much better but at least not that bumpy.
I seriously think I just creamed my pants without any influence from any outside variables.

For a runway that was only recently rebuilt and being in a Western country, the runway at AKL is quite rough.
It is safe of course (no dogs running across it or potholes etc), but it is quite rough (I'm thinking perhaps it is slightly undulating and not completely level, and feels like you are banging down the centerline the whole time even if you are slightly off center). AKL does get its fair share of rain so perhaps that has something to do with it, but if the likes of SIN with its monsoons can have a smooth runway then I don't know why AKL can't.
56 types. 38 countries. 24 airlines.

York, PA (THV) was pretty bad. Strangely, landing was fine. Takeoff...not so much. I don't know if they've resurfaced it or not (NOTAM about the rough runway isn't there anymore), but I was kind of surprised the nose gear held up on that one.

Every nearly abandoned uncontrolled small town airport in the US I've been to has been pretty horrid. Caddo Mills TX comes to mind, the runway is like a washboard, has tons of weeds growing in between the cracks, and it actually changes width on some parts. Pretty ghetto.

Guatemal City has a pretty bad runway. It sloped downhill, the TDZ is covered with rubber. It's always raining there and there is slimy mold on top of the rubber. The far end of the runway has a cliff. Three planes in the last 15 years or so have gone off the end of the runway and through the houses at the bottom of the cliff.

First couple of thousand feet of 22 at Verona (Italy) was rubbish until resurfaced recently. It was as if the rough bit was a badly built addition, as there was a massive jolt as you passed the end of it, onto the "original" section.

As a passenger I landed at Bahrain twice in 1974 and was amazed at how smooth the surface was. Next visit was in 1980 and it felt like a ploughed field. 747, 707 then 747 again. I wonder if it was heat-affected asphalt??

During Concorde flight testing, one spent a while at Singapore Paya Lebar (then the int'l airport) for rough runway trials ("Flying Concorde" by Brian Calvert).

I have always found HAV to be very rough.

To make matters worse, about halfway down the runway, there is a patch that looks exactly like an aircraft exiting the runway! Not until about a mile final do you realize it is just different coloured tar.
Just because I stopped arguing, doesn't mean I think you are right. It just means I gave up!

Lagos - Murtala Muhammad Int.
Kinshasa - Ndjili Int.

It would be much easier & smoother to just land and take off from a land fill than at those 2.
