Bell 430 Landing Gear Vs S-76 Landing Gear

Sat Mar 03, 2012 7:54 pm

Comparing these photos of the Bell 430 (230) and the Sikorski S-76 made me wonder why Bell chose this configuration for the 430 instead of the way Sikorski did for the S-76.

IMO would have made the 430 look even sharper then it already is.

Well, the Bell's sponsons contain fuel tanks. And because the gear retract into them, valuable space inside the fuselage is saved.

The versions that have skids instead of retractable gear use the space that would otherwise house the gear for increased fuel capacity.

Besided the benefit of extra fuel, I think the Bell 222/430 look way better than their contemporaries, with the stub wings rather then those without them.
