Strange Noise On Landing: KA A320

Mon Mar 19, 2012 2:14 am

I was spotting in the fog yesterday morning when a KA A320 came in to land. When the aircraft landed, I heard a sound that made me think "he's blown a tire." It was that thump-thump sound you get in a car when you've got a flat.

So, I was surprised that the pilot taxied and exited the runway (05R) using one of the high-speed exits. I had expected that they would stop on the runway.

Shortly after the aircraft exited the runway, I got a very strong smell of hot rubber.

This leads me to wondering: Is there some kind of indicator in the cockpit that tells the pilots "tire pressure is too low" or is it something you would hope they notice on the walkaround before the next flight?

The A320 has a tire pressure monitoring system. The ECAM Wheel page shows the pressure in each tire. If the pressure drops too low, the ECAM message "TYRE LO PR" will appear along with a chime and master caution light. The message is inhibited from 80 knots to 1500' and from touchdown to 80 knots.

He could have just placed one of the nose wheel on the centre-line lights

Exactly what I was thinking.....Riding on the centre line lights can give a similiar sound.

The A320 has a tire pressure monitoring system.

BA has now removed this system.
It was very unreliable and was costing too much to maintain. After 10 years, they have given up.

Thats normally the case with these added features....Costs finally determine their success.
Another commer is the Brake Temp Indication & brake cooling fans on some types.
